After 20 years of conflict, and over 46,000 civilian deaths, the Taliban returned to power. They took control of Kabul days after international forces withdrew. Upgraded by weapons, and equipment, largely paid for by the US and UK taxpayers. They also acquired the biometric data of Afghans who supported the previous government; this continues to be used in systematic revenge attacks.
Set in Afghanistan’s deadliest province, HELMAND interweaves the true stories of Corporal Henderson, Professor Noori, and a satirical diplomats tale, to ask why such blood and treasure was wasted on an unwinnable war.Â
